DOE: LED lighting products will be the most environmental friendly in the world

From a recent report published by Department of Energy (DOE), LED lighting products will be the most environmental friendly in the world. The most significant difference between LED lamps and traditional filament lamps is the degree of the impact on the environment. This report classified lighting industries as 5 levels in terms of environmental contamination or environmental effect. Among all kinds of lighting products, LED lights have been listed in level 5. “It is the last product that will cause damages to our environment.”

In another article named “The Manufacture and Effect of LED”, the author compared three different lamps (Filament Lamps, Compact Fluorescent Lamps and LED Lamps) in aspect of service life, production process and operation conditions. This report did a comprehensive study for the effects impacted by these bulbs during their packages, transportations, works and recycles. This is also the first report that discussed LED lighting products officially. DOE always spent a lot of energy on environment protection, especially for air and water sources, to maintain the international competition of the United States. There is another important reason: to save loads of money for families and companies.

“Review of the Lifecycle Energy Consumption of Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent and LED Lamps” is a conclusion mentioned in DOE’s last report. In this report, DOE continued to use this conclusion and summarized more concrete and detailed estimation.

This report suggested that traditional Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) was much similar with LED lamps in the aspect of energy consumption. Both of them consumed less energy compare with Filament lamps in manufacture, transportation and operation. Due to the high efficiency, 15W CFLs are equivalent to 60W Filament lamps. This report conducted totally 15 tests. 14 of them showed that LED lighting products will be the most environmental friendly among these three types of lamps.

In particular, LED lamps have a poor performance in recycling part. The majority of LED lamps are made of aluminum alloy, which will exert a significant effect on the earth after scrap and bury. Even so, LED lamps are still more superior than Filament Lamps and CFLs. DOE gave out several solutions for this problem and decided to improved the production process of LED lighting products to improve this situation.
